Assurance of Real-Time Performance Through Competence Assessment

Lee Middleton, Managing Partner, Fulford Certification

Learning to operate a crane competently requires the operator to demonstrate skill in real time. There is rarely a situation in a production environment where an operator will have the luxury to step back and thoughtfully consult a storehouse of past learning; the operator must integrate the past learning with action in an instant. That is competence.

We will explore the origins of competence assessment as a response to industrial accidents and human / systems interaction failures. Through this we will see that, despite often being surrounded in arcane educational terminology, competence assessment is a really very practical, common sense way of limiting risk from failures of human performance. The presentation concludes with an overview of various crane assessment methods used in North America and an outline of the benefits of using crane competence assessments to ensure real time crane operator competence on your worksites.

Crane & Rigging Conference Canada takes place in Edmonton, Alberta, 13-14 September 2012. See the agenda »
