Crane operator certification in BC & Yukon is mandatory for mobile cranes, boom trucks, and tower cranes with a rated capacity equal to or greater than five US Tons (4.54 tonnes) or with a boom length equal to or greater than 25 feet (7.62 meters). The full WorkSafe guideline can be viewed here.
There are 11 different crane operator certification categories depending on the type and lifting capacity of the crane you are operating. For the purposes of certification, the categories of crane are determined by the “deadweight” capacity, which can be found by referencing the highest lift capacity at the minimum radius found on the crane’s load chart. The following list will guide you to the type of certification you require.
Boom trucks

Folding Boom - 10 Tonnes & Under
This category is for folding boom cranes with a minimum capacity of 4.535 tonnes (or 25′ of boom length) and a maximum capacity of 10 tonnes. Fulford Certification issues the provisional (training) certification and the full certification for this crane category. Operators with this certification can only operate this category of crane.

Folding Boom - 22 Tonnes & Under
This category is for folding boom cranes with a minimum capacity over 10 tonnes and a maximum capacity of 22 tonnes. Fulford Certification issues the provisional (training) certification and the full certification for this crane category. Operators with this certification can operate any folding boom crane with a capacity up to 22 tonnes.

Folding Boom Unlimited
This category is for folding boom cranes with a minimum capacity over 22 tonnes. Operators of this crane category receive their full certification from SkilledTradesBC. Fulford Certification issues the provisional (training) certification and conducts the practical assessment for SkilledTradesBC for this crane category. Operators with this certification can operate any capacity of folding boom crane.

Stiff Boom - 20 Tonnes & Under
This category is for stiff boom cranes with a minimum capacity of 4.535 tonnes (or 25′ of boom length) and a maximum capacity of 20 tonnes. Fulford Certification issues the provisional (training) certification and the full certification for this crane category. Operators with this certification can only operate this category of crane.

Stiff Boom - 40 tonnes & Under
This category is for stiff boom cranes with a minimum capacity over 20 tonnes and a maximum capacity of 40 tonnes. Fulford Certification issues the provisional (training) certification and the full certification for this crane category. Operators with this certification can operate folding boom cranes of any capacity and stiff boom cranes with a capacity up to 40 tonnes.

Stiff Boom Unlimited
This category is for stiff boom cranes with a minimum capacity over 40 tonnes. Operators of this crane category receive their full certification from SkilledTradesBC. Fulford Certification issues the provisional (training) certification for this crane category and conducts the practical assessment for SkilledTradesBC. Operators with this certification can operate any folding or stiff boom crane.
Mobile Cranes

Mobile Hydraulic - 20 Tonnes & Under
This category is for mobile hydraulic cranes with a minimum capacity of 4.535 tonnes (or 25′ of boom length) and a maximum capacity of 20 tonnes. Fulford Certification issues the provisional (training) certification and the full certification for this crane category. Operators with this certification can only operate this category of crane.

Mobile Hydraulic - 80 Tonnes & Under
This category is for mobile hydraulic cranes with a minimum capacity over 20 tonnes and a maximum capacity of 80 tonnes. Operators of this crane category receive their full certification from SkilledTradesBC. Fulford Certification issues the provisional (training) certification for this crane category and conducts the practical assessment for SkilledTradesBC. Operators with this certification can operate all folding and stiff boom cranes and any mobile crane up to 80 tonnes.

Mobile Crane
This category is for mobile cranes with a minimum capacity over 80 tonnes. Operators of this crane category receive their full certification from SkilledTradesBC. Fulford Certification issues the provisional (training) certification for this crane category and conducts the practical assessment for SkilledTradesBC. Operators with this certification can operate any folding boom, stiff boom, mobile hydraulic or mobile crane.
Tower Cranes

Self Erect Tower Crane
Self Erect Tower Cranes are tower cranes that erect themselves and are typically operated remotely from the ground. Fulford Certification issues the provisional (training) certification and the full certification for this crane category. Operators with this certification can only operate this category of crane.

Tower Crane
Tower Cranes are erected on an engineered base, operated from a cab, and can be “hammerhead” or luffing style. Operators of this crane category receive their full certification from SkilledTradesBC. Fulford Certification issues the provisional (training) certification for this crane category and conducts the practical assessment for SkilledTradesBC. Operators with this certification can operate self erect and tower cranes.
